NORTH POLK COMET CUPBOARD
North Polk Comet Cupboard FOOD PANTRYThis Eagle Scout project, by Andrew George, was built as a way to help serve the community by providing food and personal care items to those in need. The tiny food pantry sits at the entry drive to the church and is available 24/7. The basic idea is that if you have food or items to donate, you can place them directly inside the tiny pantry, or bring them to the big red collection barrel inside the church. If you or someone you know are in need, take what you need.

Thanks to George Hess, Ernie Brees & Dixie Bequeaith who help monitor and restock the food in the mini pantry. With their help we are there 3 times/day to make certain food is always available. A continued thanks to all who still continue to drop off food!
In 2020, with many people suffering economic hardship because of the coronavirus pandemic, we began to notice that there was an even greater need for food and household items in our community. So we expanded our food pantry ministry to include a monthly bag of groceries for anyone in need - with no proof of income or other eligibility requirements. Many volunteers from the church and the community came together to donate food and pack bags each month! And many households in our community were fed!
In June of 2021, we expanded our food pantry ministry to a physical space inside the church's education wing, where we now offer two walk-in "shopping" options two evenings every month - again, with no eligibility requirements. Now, instead of us preselecting groceries for those requesting assistance, each individual can come inside to shop for the items truly needed. We are also able to offer cold and frozen foods for the indoor pantry now! And we have plans to continue expanding this food pantry ministry to better serve our community, as long as there is a need to help feed those who are hungry and food-insecure. The NP Comet Cupboard Indoor Food Pantry is open on the
1st & 3rd Wednesdays of the month from 5:00 - 6:30 PM (no appointment necessary). Education Wing of Polk City United Methodist Church 1421 W. Broadway St, Polk City, IA 50226 |
Did you know the NP Comet Cupboard is also involved in food rescue from the Polk City Kum & Go store three days a week since October of 2020? A big thanks to Diane Lukasik, Linda Pennington and Annette & Jeff Purdy who pick up the sandwiches and take them back to the church to be given out. The sandwiches are then distributed through the NP Comet Cupboards in Polk City and Sheldahl and the Blessing Box Food Pantry in Elkhart. |
