St. Luke’s Free Clinic History

St. Luke’s Free Clinic opened in 1991.   It came about because two men, Pastor Larry Conrad and Dr. Jim Blessman, then a member of this church, found a common passion.  They discovered an unmet need in this community for healthcare for those that were falling through the gaps of affordable health care.  And so, when the education wing was built, a doctor’s exam room was included and St. Luke’s Free Clinic came to be.  That was 30 years ago.

Originally, little consistent administrative and financial support and guidance existed but eventually Free Clinics of Iowa was born.  FCI gives guidance to and takes care of a lot of the necessary paperwork for its member clinics, is integral in obtaining state indemnification for professional liability for healthcare professional volunteers, and secures legislative financial support each year.  Free Clinics of Iowa now has 30 member clinics across Iowa.

Clinics are staffed only by volunteer healthcare workers and administrative staff.   We do not and cannot charge for any of our services nor can we bill any patients.  We operate with legislative funding we receive yearly and any donations from patients and other sources.  In exchange for the legislative support, we share anonymous data with the State to better evaluate healthcare needs in an under and unserved segment of our population.

Our clinic is open the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month from 6-8 pm.  We see patients for illness, for school, sports, pre and current employment physicals, and utilize our legislative funding to provide medications, some immunizations, flu vaccines, equipment and supplies.

Free clinic volunteers, past and present, from our church include Dr. Blessman, Dr. Don Young, Dr. Shari Hutchins, Becky Beck, Dixie Bequeaith, Joan Hart, Shari Nord-Houston, Tess Young, Colleen Merkle, Mai Golbuff.  We all greatly appreciate the church providing the space we utilize and their support for our mission.
